Flying Mozart

A modern meditation on life, death, and hope: »Flying Mozart« brings Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem into the present, confronting urgent contemporary themes – war, the climate crisis, and social responsibility – through the physical language of breaking and immersive stage design. This cross-genre production marks the 100th anniversary of the Rundfunkchor Berlin and is created in collaboration with the world-renowned dance crew Flying Steps.
Structured in four acts, the evening charts a journey from darkness to light, from turmoil to reflection, from guilt to hope. Along the way, it poses timeless questions: How do we confront personal responsibility? Where do we find healing and solidarity in a fractured world?
»Mozart’s music is so emotionally charged and deeply human that anyone who listens with an open heart immediately connects to it.« – Gijs Leenaars, Chief Conductor, Rundfunkchor Berlin
Reflecting on the inherent contrasts in Mozart’s composition, Leenaars adds: »Light and shadow, tension and release, the intimate and the explosive – it all flows effortlessly in Mozart’s Requiem. It’s an ideal, if unconventional, foundation for breaking.«
Vartan Bassil, founder and creative director of the Flying Steps, sees »Flying Mozart« as a powerful artistic exploration: »Flying Mozart is more than a performance – it’s a creative journey. Mozart’s Requiem grapples with existential themes that speak directly to our dance: life, death, transformation. His music has a timeless force that we’re reimagining through breaking, choir, and orchestra. I think Mozart would have loved seeing his music take new shape in such unexpected ways.«
