Celebrating 15 Years of SING!

Anniversary Section

Since 2011, SING! has stood for singing together, for encounters on equal footing, and for sustainable cultural education at Berlin primary schools. What began in 2011 as a visionary pilot project is now a firmly established part of Berlin’s cultural education landscape – sustainable, low-threshold, and deeply embedded in everyday school life.

In 2026, we celebrate 15 years of SING! – an opportunity to look back, to say thank you, and at the same time to look ahead.

Moments That Last

15 years of SING! mean countless rehearsals, concerts, first performances, and shining eyes. Encounters with the Rundfunkchor Berlin, sing-along concerts at the Berlin Philharmonie, newly founded school choirs – many of these moments have had a lasting impact on children, teachers, and entire school communities.

This anniversary would not be possible without the commitment of many people and institutions: teachers, school principals, children, singers, sponsors, and partners. Their trust, their time, and their enthusiasm have made SING! what it is today.

What has Happened So Far

The idea for SING! goes back to Simon Halsey, Honorary Conductor of the Rundfunkchor Berlin, who was inspired by the British success model Sing Up. From the first few partner schools, a strong network has grown over more than a decade and a half: 38 Berlin primary schools have taken part in SING! to date. Each school year, 600 to 800 children sing regularly in SING! choirs, supported by around 70 dedicated educators who, through weekly professional development sessions, learn to use their voices consciously and to guide children in singing with expertise and enthusiasm.

The Anniversary Year 2026

In the anniversary year, we invite you to rediscover SING! from new perspectives: with special activities, musical impulses, and encounters.

Listen now: Liederbörse and 15 Years of SING!

In the latest episode of the podcast “Ingwer und Zitrone”, Emilia speaks with Steffi Klein, project manager of the SING! education programme, about singing in Berlin primary schools. Together, they reflect on the Liederbörse as a large-scale sing-along concert for Berlin schools at the Berlin Philharmonie, as well as on SING! itself – and the experiences children gain through performing alongside the Rundfunkchor.

Steffi shares personal experiences and moving moments from her work, offering insights into how SING! leaves a lasting impact on schools. The conversation also explores the role of musical education in children’s development and how schools and teachers can become part of SING!.
