Revolution in Sound

A revolutionary concert programme in more ways than one: In February 2025, Gabriela Ortiz was awarded the Grammy for Best Contemporary Composition for »Revolución diamantina«. The work draws inspiration from the »glitter revolution« – a feminist protest movement that began in Mexico City in 2019 in response to gender-based violence and state inaction.

The second half of the concert features another powerful musical statement: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, the »Eroica«. Originally dedicated to Napoléon Bonaparte in admiration of the ideals of the French Revolution, Beethoven famously withdrew the dedication in outrage when Bonaparte crowned himself emperor, instead inscribing the work »to the memory of a great man«.

Gustavo Dudamel takes the podium to conduct this programme of musical resistance and renewal, leading the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Rundfunkchor Berlin.

Philharmonie Berlin

Opened in 1963, the Philharmonie Berlin is one of the icons of modern architecture. Architect Hans Scharoun created a completely new form for the concert hall: the 2,250 seats are arranged in different blocks, terraced like a vineyard, around a five-sided orchestra podium. Beneath the hall is the foyer, whose labyrinthine staircases cause even regular visitors to get lost time and again. The unusual silhouette of the building, whose outer shell is clad in golden aluminium panels, can also be explained by its internal layout. The hall is also considered one of the best in the world in terms of acoustics. It is home to the Berliner Philharmoniker, but is also used by other Berlin orchestras and event organisers.
