Unsuk Chin Meets Beethoven

To mark Beethoven’s 250th birthday, South Korean composer Unsuk Chin wrote the brief but striking piece »subito con forza« (suddenly with force). Very much in the Beethovenian spirit, it brims with dramatic musical and dynamic contrasts that combine into vividly energetic music. And like the work’s dedicatee, Chin is constantly striving to push the boundaries of musical language.

Ringing In the New Year with Beethoven’s Ninth

From that dedicatee – Ludwig van Beethoven himself – comes the evening’s second work. No annual New Year’s Eve concert by the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Rundfunkchor Berlin would be complete without his Ninth Symphony. Under the baton of Delyana Lazarova, the mighty final chorus, the »Ode to Joy,« will usher in the new year with a resounding message of hope for the future.

Konzerthaus Berlin Großer Saal

The Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt, framed by the German and French Cathedrals, welcomes visitors in a neoclassical setting on one of Berlin’s most beautiful squares. Destroyed almost entirely during the Second World War, it was rebuilt in 1984 and preserves the façade of the Royal Theatre designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, a building that underwent numerous alterations and once hosted both theatre and concert performances. In 1821 Carl Maria von Weber conducted the world premiere of his opera »Der Freischütz« here, in 1826 Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was heard in Germany for the first time, and after the comprehensive remodelling in the 1980s the interior was transformed into a dedicated concert venue featuring the 1,600-seat Great Hall and additional performance spaces.
