Sophie Catherin
French mezzo-soprano Sophie Catherin studied voice at the University of Music in Freiburg and German language and literature at the École normale supérieure de Lyon concurrently. Her most important teachers include Towako Sato-Schöllhorn, Renate Behle, and Janet Williams. She was a finalist in the 2019 Benvenuto Franci International Vocal Competition (Pienza, Italy).
She gained her first choral experience at the three Berlin opera houses as well as with the French chamber ensemble Exosphères. As a soloist, her focus is on contemporary music theater. She has collaborated with composers such as Helmut Oehring, Hans Wüthrich, Irene Galindo Quero, and Andys Skordis—as well as with the Freiburg Opera, the Schlossplatztheater Köpenick, and the Neuköllner Oper. Since 2017, she has been a member of Opera Lab Berlin, with which she has performed in staged productions of music by Bernhard Lang, Carola Bauckholt, and Karlheinz Stockhausen at venues including the Staatstheater Weimar and the Musiktheatertage Wien. In 2019, she founded the ensemble for contemporary music theater Opéra sur Tréteaux with singer and composer Daniel Arnaldos.
She has been a permanent member of the Rundfunkchor Berlin since August 2024.
