Symphony No. 2 in C minor »Resurrection«
for soloists, choir and orchestra
»When I conceive a large musical structure, I always reach a point where I must draw upon the ›word‹ as the vehicle for my musical idea.« And so it was that Mahler decided to incorporate voices into the finale of his Second Symphony, adding them to an already almost overflowing orchestra. To complete the final step – from the funeral ceremony and remembrance of the »earthly hero« whose life is recounted, to redemption and resurrection – Mahler needed one last surge of intensity. Here, the word had to come into play.
It is therefore a great honour for the Rundfunkchor Berlin, prepared by Nico Köhs, to join the WDR Sinfonieorchester as guests for this performance. The concert is conducted by Robin Ticciati, whom Berlin audiences will remember fondly from his time as Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. The solo parts are sung by soprano Nikola Hillebrand and mezzo-soprano Alice Coote.

The Philharmonie Essen is an outstanding concert hall housed in the historic Saalbau, located close to the Stadtgarten in the heart of the city. Here, the building’s long-standing architectural heritage, dating back to its opening in 1904, blends with state-of-the-art acoustics and technical facilities, which were comprehensively modernised in 2004. The impressive Alfried Krupp Hall, with its almost 1,900 seats, forms the centrepiece of the venue and, like the smaller RWE Pavilion, provides a stage for a diverse programme ranging from classical music to jazz. As the symphonic home of the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonie Essen stands for musical excellence and, with its brilliant sound and welcoming atmosphere, attracts visitors from across the Ruhr region and far beyond.
