Joohoon Shin

The lyric tenor Joohoon Shin was born in Incheon, South Korea. He began his vocal studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff and went on to complete a performance diploma in singing at the Hochschule für Musik in Weimar, where he studied with Gudrun Fischer. Even during his studies he appeared frequently as a soloist in Bach cantatas and oratorios.

Now a sought-after soloist and acclaimed Bach interpreter, he performs a wide range of concert repertoire and collaborates with ensembles such as the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Deutsches Kammerorchester Berlin, Neues Kammerorchester Potsdam, lautten compagney Berlin, l’arte del mondo, Zwischenakt Berlin and many choirs and church music ensembles. Since 2014 he has been a permanent member of the Rundfunkchor Berlin, for which he also regularly takes on solo parts.

Joohoon Shin has worked with many of today’s leading conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Kirill Petrenko, Riccardo Chailly, Christian Thielemann, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Daniel Harding, Christoph Eschenbach and Kent Nagano. Alongside performances throughout Germany, international tours have taken him to New York, Paris, London, Budapest, Barcelona, Granada, Milan, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels, Lucerne, Basel, Salzburg, Vienna, Szczecin, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Seoul, São Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. Most recently he sang the Servant in Handel’s »Solomon« and the Shepherd in Wagner’s »Tristan und Isolde« with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Robin Ticciati at the Philharmonie Berlin.
