Axel Scheidig, born in Sonneberg (Thuringia), received his first musical training at the special school for music education in Wernigerode and in that town’s radio youth choir. From 1991 to 1997 he studied singing and music theatre in Weimar with Helga Bante, also attending singing courses given by Barbara Schlick, Siegfried Lorenz, Kurt Moll and Jakob Stämpfli.
In 1997 Scheidig was a prizewinner at the International Handel Competition in Halle. The following year he sang on several occasions with the North German Radio (NDR) Chorus. He founded the vocal ensemble The Weimar Court Singers, which was heard on tour in numerous cities, including Paris, Verona and Athens, and in 1998 was a German Music Council prizewinner; its recordings have appeared on the Dabringhaus und Grimm label.
From 2002 to 2004 Axel Scheidig sang as a permanent member of Collegium Vocale of Ghent. As a soloist he was engaged by the theatres in Gera, Eisenach and Weimar, appearing in operas including Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Orff’s Die Kluge, Verdi’s Don Carlos and Offenbach’s La Vie parisienne.
Scheidig began singing with Rundfunkchor Berlin in 1998 and became a permanent member of the ensemble in 2005. His solo performances with the chorus include the staged performance of Sir John Tavener’s The Veil of the Temple at Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof in 2007.
Together with three other Rundfunkchor Berlin singers, Axel Scheidig is a member of the ensemble 6cant, and he appears regularly all over Europe with the soloist ensemble The Charmonists.
