René Voßkühler began singing with Rundfunkchor Berlin in 1995 and has been a permanent member since 1999. The tenor was born in 1963 in Anklam (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) and as a schoolchild sang in his hometown’s boys choir. After finishing school he studied singing at the Hanns Eisler Musikhochschule of Berlin and completed his studies with a diploma in singing in 1990. Between 1990 and 1992 he acquired stage experience in the studio of the Berlin Komische Oper, then, until 1996, was a soloist in the ensembles of the theatre of Frankfurt an der Oder and the Hans Otto Theatre in Potsdam.
The theatre is Voßkühler’s great passion. In November 2005 he sang the role of the First Prisoner in Beethoven’s Fidelio under Sir Simon Rattle in Tokyo in the production by Nikolaus Lehnhoff; in May of that year he sang the tenor solo in Lars Scheibner’s staging of The Sealed Angel by Rodion Shchedrin; and in November he also sang the part of the Youth in Schubert’s opera Alfonso und Estrella under Nikolaus Harnoncourt. He can also be heard as as soloist on Kent Nagano’s recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass (harmonia mundi HMC 801840.41). Together with his wife Isabelle Voßkühler, Kristiina Mäkimattila and David Stingl he founded a vocal quartet within the Rundfunkchor dedicated to this newly revived repertoire, which presented its first programmes in Tokyo as well as under the auspices of the Radio Chorus’s KammermusikPodium. The tenor is also devoted to lieder singing and is also a member of the chamber group 6cant.
