Das Singphonische Quartett

The Singphonische Quartett is a “downsized male choir” dedicated to performing classical instrumental works that normally defy any attempt at singing them. To make them accessible all the same, the Singphonische Quartett comes up with texts more or less appropriate for this purpose, answering questions both hilarious and serious such as:

Why is hair so important to the Barber of Seville?
Are there any pre-natal compositions by W.A. Mozart?
Who knows Victor Gottlieb Obdenbrecht, the inventor of the clothes peg?
Why does the spider “Miss Schröder” believe that the housefly „Little Irene“ is defacing monuments?

Albert Lortzing’s quodlibet arrangement of the overture to Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte is the starting-point of this kind of repertoire. But the group’s own arrangements are also very entertaining. Apart from overtures and symphonies provided with texts the programme features musical parodies and curious anecdotes from the history of music. In addition, the ensemble is ostensibly trying to enrich its mother tongue – with mixed success.

The male quartet consisting of

Hans-Christian Braun - tenor
Joachim Vogt - tenor
Michael Timm - bass
Oliver Gawlik - bass

was established at a party to mark the bicentenary of Albert Lortzing’s birth. Pianists like Philip Mayers and Monika Gröbl act as accompanists.
